Olivia Sabee

Olivia Sabee is associate professor of dance at Swarthmore College and a 2023-2026 Mellon New Directions Fellow. Her research examines 18th- and 19th-century French and Italian ballet with emphases on theories of narrative and embodiment, cultural exchange, and book history. She is the author of Theories of Ballet in the Age of the Encyclopédie (2022) as well as numerous journal articles. In addition to serving on the Dance Chronicle advisory board, she is also on the advisory boards of Studies in Eighteenth-Century Culture and the AIRDanza Review, and together with Lynn Brooks, co-chairs the Dancing the Long Nineteenth Century Working Group for the DSA. Her current research project focuses on the movement of late 18th-century dancers between France, Saint-Domingue, and the eastern United States.
